What does a fire protection engineer review on a data center project?

A fire protection engineer may review the project code strategy, fire protection and alarm design, detection and suppression, egress, fire-resistance features, special hazards, system interfaces, mechanical control sequences, emergency-power interactions, calculations, specifications, design documentation, and AHJ comments. The scope should reflect the project phase and facility conditions. Design review evaluates documents, assumptions, coordination, and compliance before or during construction; testing and commissioning verify installed systems and their intended interactions. One does not replace the other.

Design Review Tests the Engineering Basis on Paper

A design review examines the applicable code basis, drawings, specifications, calculations, narratives, sequences, and interdisciplinary coordination. It can identify conflicting requirements, incomplete interfaces, unsupported assumptions, and documentation gaps before they become installed conditions.

For retrofit work, reviewers may also need verified existing conditions, impairment constraints, phased construction requirements, and the effect of modifications on operating systems.

Design Review Is Not System Testing

Design review evaluates what the documents require and whether the intended approach is coordinated. Functional testing evaluates installed equipment or systems. Integrated systems testing evaluates the interconnections and sequence of systems required to operate together. Commissioning is a broader process for documenting and verifying that project requirements are defined and achieved.

These activities inform one another but are not interchangeable. A clear basis of design and sequence of operations helps create testable acceptance criteria; field results can then identify installation, programming, documentation, or coordination issues.

Conceptual System Coordination

A mission-critical fire event can involve detection, control logic, mechanical response, suppression, emergency power, monitoring, and occupant notification. The exact systems and sequence vary by project, so the design documents should define the applicable cause-and-effect relationships.

NFPA 4 provides a framework for integrated testing where fire protection and life-safety systems are required to function together. It does not replace the acceptance testing required for individual systems.

When Review and Commissioning Support Add Value

Independent review can support early code strategy, design milestones, permit responses, construction changes, and resolution of complex interfaces. Testing and commissioning support become especially important when multiple disciplines must confirm end-to-end performance.

EB Life Safety can provide review, AHJ coordination, integrated testing, and commissioning support within a defined scope for new construction, expansions, renovations, and existing facilities.
